Rainy Afternoon

Model: Coco
Location: Fisipol UGM, Jogjakarta

On Last Sunday Morning I had an appointment with one Jogja Cosplay Community. But because some funny factors, including most of the cosplayers was exhausted after clothes hunting madness together, the event got to be canceled.
I'm cool with that, guess I would spent the rest of holiday with procrastinating at home. But it looked like some of the friends [Dina and Yosafat] was gonna have spontaneus private event. They started doing their private session and calling me to join. Since I didn't have anything to do I agree with them.
Then we started the session, untill they ask me to ask Coco to be our model. There I called her.
[Fun fact, when I called her, at first I couldn't hear her clearly. I'm pretty sure she was sleeping when I called but she just didn't admit it XD]
So this is the result from the session with Coco. I'm gonna upload the one with Yosafat later.
It was raining a little and the atmosphere was humid and cold. So I try to keep the tone soft and not too much over exposure to maintain the feeling that the session was taken after the rain indeed.

Freya in Tamansari

Model/Cosplayer: Freya
Location: Tamansari Water Castle

Nouhime from Gakuen Basara Cosplay

Model\Cosplayer: Coco
Performing Nouhime from Sengoku Basara - Gakuen Basara Version

The session didn't take long. Prolly just need around 1-1,5 hours including preparation which prolly took 15 minutes long [My session usually take time about 2-3 hours, depends on the situation]
Because aparently the model got nervous in performing Nouhime in her old school, maybe she got shy if teacher found her out on dress like that. Lol, I think that's cutie funny.
But quality won vs quantity, we manage to get some cool shots and nice lighting.

Rosse Legrant [Original Character]

Coco as The Unyu Soldier
Unyu:
1. The way Indonesian noobs to say cute.
2. "Unyu" is a word that people say when they see something cute or sweet.
source: http://www.urbandictionary.com

Model: Coco
performing her original character Rosse Legrant, European Secret Soldier.
Location: Ex Mataram Theatre, Jogjakarta
Coco is the one who got the idea of the location. It's an old abandoned theatre that has not been used for years. The walls are crumbled, graffitis are everywhere, and wild bushes is dominating the ground. It's perfect. Most of all, for location that cool, nobody there using it for photo session other than us. So we are practically free to do what we want.

Session with Dina

Cosplayer: Dina Lee
Location: UKDW , Jogjakarta, Indonesia
Cosplaying Hatsune Miku
Dina is home again for another cosplay of Miku. I met her on UKDW Japfest event.

I'm Going Candid

I have portrait lens with my 50mm f1.8 , medium and semi wide lens with my kit lens, but I don't have far coverage. So I decide to get one tele lens which is cheap. No AF-S, and no VR. I can manage, my D80 has built in motor on body so AF-D is not a problem and I love noisy lens sound. And for very long range [around 200-300mm] I'll use a tripod.

So I did some tests

Not Following The Rule [and Happy with It]

As you can see from my shots, lot of them are flared, over saturate, and over exposure. That three factors was not a mistake. I did it in purpose, because that's the way I like it.
I heard that rule of portrait photography is it would be good when the face can be seen clearly, no disturbing shadow, the exposure is standard, and the skin color is natural. Well, I never think about that and still doing it differently. What most on my concern is about one thing, moment. Because, see, sometime when photographers getting busy preparing anything to get good picture like how it said has to be, they forgot about maintain mood, time, and some lucks. And then, because they do a lot of hard work rig the scene, there's mind set on them: this must be good because I prepared anything perfectly. But I believe, it doesn't work that way.
Good lighting and number on your camera is just a constants. And constants is boring because it always the same. It's not enough to got just right picture, we need to got good picture, which is the thing determined by that moment thing.
Like I said I'm a digital artist and cinematographer before I'm a photographer. And I'm still doing that for living. Photography? That's just a hobby for me. That's why my brain work differently. Photographer starts from understanding camera works then continues to make a good shot. I do the opposite. I understand the art and composition, then I learn the camera works. So I'm weak theoretically, I admit that. I'm still learning.
